Sporadic fighting likely to continue in Myanmar: Thai PM

PHNOM PENH, Nov 17 - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Wednesday Myanmar Prime Minister Thein Sein has informed him that sporadic fighting between government troops and ethnic armed forces is likely to continue in border areas, while urging Thailand to help take care of the Myanmar people who flee into Thailand to escape the clashes into the neighbouring territory.

The Thai premier made the remarks as he met his Myanmar counterpart on the sidelines of the 4th Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) Summit in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh.

Mr Abhisit said he has discussed with Mr Thein Sein over the clashes between the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) splinter faction and the Myanmar army along the Thai-Myanmar border which erupted immediately after the country's first election in 20 years on Nov 7 and had an impact on Thailand.

The Myanmar premier said that minor clashes between the government troops and the ethnic armed forces are likely to continue in some areas for a certain period and has sought cooperation from Thailand to help take care of the Myanmar people who escaped the fights, according to Mr Abhisit.

Some 20,000 Myanmar people fled fighting in Myawaddy into Mae Sot district in Thailand's Tak province, while several thousands crossed the border to Kanchanaburi's Sangkhla Buri district as the DKBA faction clashed with Myanmar troops in the Myanmar border town of Phaya Tong Su.

The Thai authorities have provided them temporary shelters and initial humanitarian aid, while pledging that they will not force the mainly ethnic Karen back to their homes if the situation there remained unsafe.

Most of the Myanmar people however returned to their countries as the clashes ended, with some of them returning into Thai territory when renewed gunfire is heard.

Regarding the release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, the Thai premier said he has been informed that the release was done according to the law as the detention period expired.

When asked whether Suu Kyi's release will ease pressure from the international community on Myanmar, Mr Abhisit said it depends on the stance of western countries, which is now still unclear.

Mr Abhisit however said initially Myanmar has responded to the reaction of the world community as it had earlier promised. (MCOT online news)
