The three main Kachin ceasefire groups in Kachin State, northern Burma will be issued white colour identity cards (ID) instead of the common national ID card (red in colour) by the Burmese military junta.

The order was issued by Burma's ruling junta through the Northern Command commander Maj-Gen Ohn Myint to the immigration offices in Kachin State. All the members of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) and its armed wing Kachin Independence Army (KIA), the New Democratic Army-Kachin (NDA-K) and Lasang Awng Wa Peace Group would have white colour ID cards issued to them, a source said.

The commander has ordered completion of the ID for the Kachin ceasefire groups within a month. Some immigration officers have already arrived in Laiza which is a KIO controlled area for processing the ID, said a source close to the immigration office.

The reason behind making white colour ID cards is to differentiate between citizens and Kachin ceasefire group members. The ID cards will not be valid to help make passports to travel abroad. Card holders can only travel within the country and can stay in one place for only two weeks, according to local immigration officers.

Some members of Kachin ceasefire groups have already made the common national ID card (red colour) but whether they can use it anymore is still uncertain, the immigration officers added.

In November last year, Burmese military junta had made first time white colour identity cards for residents in Sumprabum town in Putao district which is in the KIO controlled area after negotiating with the KIO.

Meanwhile, the authorities in Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State have made national ID card for residents who are over the age of 18 and the family unit (Ing-htaung-su) for residents who stay without documents in town.
