Over 90% of South Sudanese voted for Independence. Now the region is
free from oppression of the North.  People of South Sudan
overwhelmingly voted for independence because they want to be free
from over 50 years of oppression of Sudanese government. If people
have been oppressed for so long, they indeed want to separate from the
oppressors.
Although North Sudan attempted to keep the South by force for many
years, finally the North allows the South to separate from North in
peaceful way by allowing them to hold  referendum. Why did the North
allow the South to go? It is unusual for larger ethnic group to let
smaller  ethnic group to go easily because larger ethnic group want to
dominate small ethnic group as long as they can. Of course, there is
no free lunch.  If you want to dominate others, you have to pay for
it.  In the case of Sudan, North Sudanese believed keeping South
Sudanese by force is no longer benefiting the North. By forcing  the
South to be part of Sudan, North Sudanese suffers from both political
and economic problems or pay higher cost for both politically and
economically. Sudan became one of the poorest countries in the world.
In order to force South Sudan part of the Sudan, Sudan has to impose
military rule and keep oppressed people of Sudan including the North
all the time. North Sudan lost both political and economic freedom.
They became poorer and poorer.  Finally, North Sudan realized that
keeping the South cost them too much. They cannot gain freedom unless
give freedom to the South. Finally they decided to let the South go
peacefully.  Please note that separation does not cause violence.
Preventing from separation causes political and ethnic violence. In
the case of Sudan, since the North allows the South to go peacefully,
there no major violence occurs during the referendum or separation
process.
Referendum become a popular method  for conflict resolution
Whether Burmese military regime or Burman like it or not, referendum
become a popular method to solve ethnic conflict around the world. The
following link provides step by step for holding peaceful referendum
in South Sudan. Both UN and countries around world including the U.S.
support referendum in the South Sudan.  Referendum becomes a popular
method to solve ethnic conflict around the world.
What Burma can learn from Sudan?
Burma can learn many things from Sudan.
 1. Military rule and oppression cannot prevent from separation.
Military rule and oppression only accelerates secession movement and
cause political and economic disasters in Burma.
 2. Not only non-Burman suffer from the military rule and oppression,
Burman also suffer from the military rule and oppression.  By forcing
non-Burman ethnic groups to be part of Burma or Burman,  Burman have
to pay very high price. They suffer from both economically and
politically. They also cannot enjoy political freedom like other
countries do. They become poorer and poorer.
3. Referendum can be a method to solve ethnic conflict in Burma.  I
know that most of Burman do not want to hear word referendum.  Indeed,
what you want to be and what you should be are different.  No to
referendum is what most Burmese military regime and  Burman “want”.
But holding referendum is what “should” be or need to be done for both
Burman and non-Burman to live peacefully side by side forever.  In the
case Sudan, the North welcome the new country of the South and willing
to work together for economic development and willing to live
peacefully side by side.
4. Like people of North Sudan, Burman need to think  deeply  about the
cost and benefits of keeping non-Burman part of Burma or Burman
region. If Burman think it is benefit to Burman, then keep them. If
not, let them go.  Both groups can live peacefully and happily
forever.
