Minor appeasement of UN by junta: MNDF

The Burmese military junta or the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) released 9,002 prisoners on Tuesday all right but it is deceiving the United Nations by appeasing it somewhat, alleged Mon political organization, the Mon National Democratic Front (MNDF).

Nai Ngwe Thein, vice chairman of the MNDF said the UN has been urging the Burmese regime to release all political prisoners including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and Khun Tun Oo of the Shan National League for Democracy (SNLD).

"The SPDC has no intention of releasing all the political prisoners and that's why they just released about seven political prisoners and there are no ethnic political prisoners among them," Nai Ngwe Thein, a key Mon politician said.

He added that it was tantamount to taking the UN for a ride because they have not released important political prisoners such Daw Suu Kyi and other ethnic political prisoners.

According to a UN press release on Wednesday, among those released is U Win Tin, Dr May Win Myint, U Aung Soe Myint, U Khin Maung Swe, Win Htain, Dr Than Nyein and U Thein Naing. Some 2,000 political prisoners are currently estimated to be still in detention in Myanmar.

Nai Ngwe Thein said that the SPDC should have released Dr May Win Myint and other political prisoners earlier. But SPDC kept extending their period of detention on various pretexts.

The Burmese junta won't release detained political prisoners because the pressure from UN has not been strong enough, said Nai Ngwe Thein who served seven years in Moulmein prison Mon State from 1997-2004.

According to Ko Tate Naing of the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) based in Thailand, most of the released prisoners were held under different charges.
