Thailand signs to buy power from Burma
(Agencies) - Burma has signed an agreement with Thailand and with Singapore companies to provide electricity from a Burmese hydro-power project.
State media in Burma said the project in the south of the country will generate 600 megawatts of electricity, but gave few details of the deals.
It is understood that the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, or Egat, signed on behalf of Thailand.
Burma is under sanctions by the United States and Europe because of its human rights record.
But the impact of the sanctions has been weakened as neighbours China, India and Thailand spend billions of dollars for a share of Burma's energy resources to solve energy problems at home.
