In a bid to woo the ethnic Kachin electorate, two high ranking officials of the Burmese ruling military junta began mobilising them for the 2010 elections while they addressed the 61st anniversary of Kachin State Day in northern Burma today, said participants. The election speeches were addressed before 9 a.m. local time by Brig-Gen Thein Zaw, Minister for Posts, Telegraph and Communication from Naypyidaw, the new capital of Burma and Maj-Gen Soe Win, the junta's Northern Military Command commander (Ma Pa Kha) based in Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin state, according to local participants. The two Burmese military officials said that the country's new constitution had been approved and all Kachin people should support the ensuing 2010 general elections in accordance with the new constitution. The Burmese military officials' speeches followed the anniversary speech of 15 minutes by Duwa Mading Zung Ting, head of the Central Kachin Culture Office based in Shatapru quarter in Myitkyina, added participants. After delivering the anniversary day speeches, the special "State Day Manau dance" followed from 9 a.m. The Manau dance was performed together by the leaders of the Kachin ceasefire groups--- Salang kaba Lanyaw Zawng Hra of chairman of Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), Zahkung Ting Ying of chairman of New Democratic Army-Kachin (NDA-K), Lasang Awng Wa of leader of Lasang Awng Wa Peace Group and the two Burmese military officers--- Brig-Gen Thein Zaw and Maj-Gen Soe Win, said Manau Committee sources. At 6 p.m., dignitaries from both Kachin ceasefire groups and Burmese military junta along with special invited guests were served special dinner of the 61st anniversary of Kachin State in the Majoi Hall in Kachin National Manau Park, said a committee spokesperson. On the other hand, the London-based Kachin National Organization (KNO) severely criticized the Burmese military junta saying "the junta is trying to abolish the name of the 'Kachin State' in Burma by using the term 'Northern Command Region', 'Special Region-1' and 'Special Region-2', in its statement on 61st anniversary of Kachin State Day on January 10, 2009. The KNO statement also stated that Kachins have to oust the military junta first so that the self-determination rule can be restored in Kachin State. |
